I once took a graduate course in Fichte, Schelling and Hegel from Professor Emil Fackenheim.

Every Monday evening, about a dozen students from all over the University of Toronto, otherwise total strangers, would gather to listen to him hold forth in a corner seminar room of University College and then proceed to get lost in that great echo chamber called 19th century German idealism, a form of thought that a wag once described as a "Big Subject."

Emil Fackenheim: A lovely man, yes. A successful academic, undoubtedly. But "the greatest Jewish thinker in the latter part of the 20th century" ...
