President Bush's State of the Union address was, if nothing else, a study in contradictions: A call for a balanced budget by a president who has brought the country to record deficits. A call for the government to take on the cause of affordable health care for those least able to afford it, from a president who has done his level best to bleed the federal government dry and to render it utterly incapable of providing even the most basic assistance to its most desperate citizens.
