Peacock Middle School's musical is the Itasca school's most popular spring event.

It is especially anticipated by eighth-graders like 13-year-old Lara Putzell, who has looked forward to getting a crack at the lead.

So when the school canceled the production because the director could not commit to its five-month schedule, Lara took matters into her own hands.

"I have worked hard to get to this point," said Lara, who has performed in the last two musicals. "I talked with the principal to see what I could do."
