Meaning in metaphysical language is probably one of the most controversial issues in contemporary linguistic study. Many scholars, including Alfred Korzybski and Earl Hautala, have advocated circumventing the use of metaphysical language. However, other scholars believe that it is not possible to discuss issues without the use of metaphysical language. These scholars argue that the attempt to circumvent the language is metaphysical itself.
