SALEM - After many years of working in New York, Joanne Mattera moved here in October and now lives and works in a former auto body shop. On the walls of her studio are hung her latest series of encaustic paintings, two dozen 12-by-12-inch works and larger ones of various sizes. Encaustic is a 2,000-year-old technique that involves brushing or dripping molten pigmented wax onto a wood panel prepared with several layers of wax. Today she starts with a panel that has already been prepared and painted. The "ground" - or base color - is maroon, which she made by brushing a thin blue layer over red...
