Since the pioneering studies carried out by Derek Freeman on the lban, Bill Geddes on the Bidayuh and Stephen Morris on the Melanau in the early 1950s, a great deal of ethnographic information has been collected about the peoples of Borneo. However, one of the intriguing aspects of scholarship in this region is the paucity of attempts to bring together material across ethnic boundaries: there is only a handful of pan-Borneo collections focussing on specific themes, and even fewer monographs by individual authors which make substantial use of materials about a range of different ethnic groups...
