CRITERIA for the Kobal photographic portrait award are purposefully vague, defined as "new and innovative approaches to an established photographic genre". Indeed, the winning entry by Leon Steele records only the back of his nine-year-old nephew, although his portrait of the boy's face is also included in the exhibition.
