In addition to efficient synthesis of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation, acquisition of the mitochondrial endosymbiont brought a whole range of new metabolic capabilities to the ancestral eukaryotic cell lineage such that the mitochondrion retains an important role in numerous anabolic and catabolic processes.
