The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center on the campus of Chadron State College in Northwestern Nebraska was dedicated in September 2002. Sandoz, celebrated writer of the great plains and trans-Missouri region, will be of interest to Women and Language readers because she wrestled with language issues as she wrote of the region and its native inhabitants. She found the task difficult because of her need to "to say some of the things of the Indian for which there are no white-man words."
