If we only had a president," sighed a liberal Democratic House member. A growing number of Democrats in both houses feel that way. The suspicion that he is not, in Lyndon Johnson's famous formulation, "a man you can go to the well with" was hardened into grim conviction when he casually betrayed his party in an encounter with Texas fat cats. The disease to please has consumed him. His infamous words about raising taxes too much are liberally quoted in the debate over Medicare, displayed on charts by gleeful Republicans.
