Harlem is not a neighborhood measured simply by streets and avenues, but by the way its life and spirit have touched Black America. For many, this enclave in northern Manhattan served as a place where fashion, art and a community all took root, a legacy that lives on today.
Harlem was in its heyday in the years between World War I and II. Due to its dynamic explosion of creativity from the people who lived there, this time is forever known as the Harlem Renaissance.
