FILM Watering down classic works for the popcorn-munching masses is always problematic. But the latest Merchant Ivory production, THE GOLDEN BOWL, based on the novel by Henry James, presents a special case. It may be ill-conceived, disastrously miscast and often downright silly (more Slaves of New York than Howards End), but at least it saves us all the trouble of plowing through James' notoriously impenetrable final novel.
Who would have thought that somewhere amid the author's extravagantly dense verbal thicket was an Aaron Spelling midseason replacement waiting to be born? The Golden Bow...
