The Berlin Wall might have come down more than a decade ago but in terms of German beach protocol, it is still as potent and divisive as ever. The thing that is most likely to distinguish the West German beach babe from her counterpart in the East is her swimming costume - western beach babes tend to wear them, those from the East don't.

The East German love of naturism is similar to many British holidaymakers' addiction to grumbling about prices or wearing Union flag trunks. It's a curious tribal idiosyncrasy that falls just short of being offensive, although it is lost on other nations.
