India, with its uninterrupted literary history of three thousand years and its multilingual, multidialect spread, can be a confounding affair for the literary historian. Fortunately, there is an underlying unity that makes each segment quite intelligible to the rest. The ground for this unity is provided by a vast structure of religious and secular myths that has been processed through the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and made available in all Indian languages, which take the message to the common man in many ways. Folk theatre is one of those ways.
