FRED PLOTKIN on the incomparable cuisine of one of Spain's smallest regions
Spain is the setting for many operas, each of whose characters would feast on very different foods according to which region their story takes place in. The characters in Le Nozze di Figaro and Il Barbiere di Siviglia live in Seville and probably enjoy oranges, onions, fish and rice. Verdi's gloomy royals in Don Carlo live in the Escorial and likely feast on meats, cheeses, sweets and dark red wines.
