I AM familiar with Jonathan rayner's first edition of The Films of Peter Weir and with his excellent Contemporary Australian Cinema (2000) and so i can whole-heartedly recommend rayner as a reliable and well-informed critic of australian film, and of Weir's work in particular. His chapters on 'australian gothic' and 'The Male Ensemble Film' (in his 2000 publication) are particularly good, and so it was with much enthusiasm that i agreed to review his latest offering.
