The Ismailite minority of Afghanistan is concentrated in the mountainous region of Bdakhshan, and has been discrimminated against by the Sunni majority for most of the 20th century. Gorno-Badakhshan could, with federal assistance, serve as a center for the Ismailis to retain their religious identity. In the meantime, the Pamir Ismailis must promote positive relations with their neighbors and participate in local politics.
