Greek goddess of the hearth, Hestia has been presented as the female challenge to the 'center' as represented by the phallus. However, there is little supporting documentation to support the humanised theory. Hestia may also be a symbolic representation of the sacred hearth without female or male associations. However, evidence suggests a connection between round shapes such as the omphalos and the female gender. The sacred hearth may represent an 'omphalo-centric' symbol as opposed to a phallocentric symbol.
