Abortion has seemed a valence issue -- up-or-down, prolife or prochoice -- splitting the nation in two, pushing people to extremes. Dr. David Gunn's murder by an antiabortion (prolife?) fanatic outside a Florida clinic two months ago served to heighten that view. But the Massachusetts House has demonstrated otherwise in the last 10 days. Debate has moved away from the fringes toward the middle.
