Richard Cohen's Oct. 13 op-ed column, "Dubious Saints," which questioned Pope John Paul II's "intentions" in declaring Edith Stein to be a Catholic saint, goes beyond a legitimate airing of understandable Jewish concerns and into the realm of armchair psychologizing. Certainly, the issues raised by the canonization are complex and sensitive, as Baltimore's Cardinal William Keeler -- the U.S. Roman Catholic Church's top official for Jewish-Catholic relations -- pointed out in his statement to the American bishops.
