THE BIG surprise in "Candy Mountain" is how much fun it is. Co-directors Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlizer take the dated road movie off its bricks, gussy it up and keep it chugging along. And you get sweeter on "Candy" with every passing mile. Kevin J. O'Connor, who played Ernest Hemingway as a besotted moron with a penchant for pseudo-aphorisms in "The Moderns," uses similar characteristics to delightfully confused effect as a gawky, goodhearted wayfarer named Julius. On a harebrained odyssey to find a reclusive guitar maker, he heads for Canada by way of T-Bird, VW, pickup and just plain thumb...
