Bhutan's rugged terrains and enforced isolation enable its government to protect the country's architectural heritage from Western influence. However, modernist ideas are gradually entering the country's boundaries, threatening the survival of Bhutan's centuries-old architectural tradition. These ideas have undesirable effects on the cultural, aesthetic and economic independence of Bhutan.
