WE WERE interested, though not surprised, to see in a story on the Federal page Monday that a lot of people who gave copiously of their money and clout to the Bush campaign have it in mind to become American ambassadors abroad. The problem is that of the seven applicants described in the article by Ann Devroy, no fewer than four listed Italy as their first choice. This is alarming news, since the article also stated that more than 300 requests for ambassadorships had already come in.
