In the first chapter of Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," a drunken ne'er-do-well learns that he is related to one of the oldest, most esteemed families in the county. Teetering home, Jack Durbeyfield devises a scheme to beg money from the distant family whose name is so similar: the D'Urbervilles. And he decides to send his eldest daughter, the beautiful Tess, to accomplish that task.
