THIS MORNING Tesco announces profits of more than Pounds 2.5 billion, on sales up by
11 per cent to Pounds 47 billion, testimony to its awesome appetite for growth. That is apparent in Marylebone, where the company wants to open a new store that would bring its total to 10 within a square mile.
The impact of the proposed 3,000 square foot outlet on local businesses and nearby high streets would not be as extreme as that of the 80,000-squarefoot superstore it wanted in Yiewsley, Hillingdon, which triggered a backlash. By contrast, the company says residents of Lisson Grove want a new Tesco.
