[HEADNOTE ]

I'm a registered nurse in the emergency unit at a small hospital. I receive many calls from people asking for advice about how to manage their health problems. Should registered nurses agree to give advice to people over the phone?

Rigistered nurses can give telephone advice if they have the iecessary knowledge, skills and judgment to do so, and as long as agency policies and support systems are in place that enable the nurses to provide this care safely and ethically.
