Winifred Stanford remembers five years ago when the Wake Robin Golf Club celebrated its 60th anniversary. A woman unfamiliar with the club was struck by who was playing in the club's tournament. "She couldn't believe so many black women were playing golf," Stanford said. Wake Robin, now in its 65th year, is believed to be the first golf club in the United States for black female golfers.
