Strict environmental regulations prompted the printing industry to employ control systems that will reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These also led to the technological advancement of VOC-control units which remove and destroy VOCs and other hazardous compounds. The most preferred units are the regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) and the regenerative catalytic oxidizer (RCO). RTOs provides up to 95% heat recovery efficiency and thus consumes less energy. RCOs, on the other hand, have the energy efficiency of the RTO and lower natural gas usage.
