Total Swedish arable land area fell 1% to 2.78 million hectares in 1998, according to preliminary results, from Statistics Sweden annual June survey. The survey also showed that the bread grain area (wheat and rye) jumped 18%, while the feed grain area slipped 4%.
In total, the grain area rose 2% to 1 .3mha, partly as a result of farmers moving away from seeded grassland as the number of Swedish livestock continued to fall, the survey said. A large increase was also recorded for the legume area, which rose 39% to 59 400ha.
