From the time he was in grade school, Dr. William Hays wanted to be a military man. He went to a military high school in his native New Mexico, then got a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

But one day early in his training, the young first lieutenant looked around at the old, grizzled guys who had lived his dream of being a career soldier and decided he didn't want to look like that, said his wife, Toni of Hopkins.
