The island of Sumatra in Indonesia is trying to attract foreign investment and develop its economic potential. Despite being rich in natural resources it has always lagged economically behind Java, which despite being three times smaller has almost three times as many people.
AT THE almost-completed P.T. Riau Andalan pulp mill, Sumatra sees its future, and is holding its breath that it works. When it starts up early next year, this $1.3 billion project outside Pekanbaru, one of the largest pulp-mills in the world, will employ 1,094 workers at a wage starting at 350,000 rupiahs ($160) a month....
