The Christian Century, August 10th, 1994

AT THE END of Margarethe von Trotta's film The Leaden Time (1981), the young son of a murdered terrorist turns to his aunt. "Tell me about my mother," he says. For the viewer, the mother's story seems to have ended; but for the boy the story is the beginning. As viewers leave the theater, they wonder: what version of the past will his aunt give him?
