Steven Millhauser is the best fiction writer in creating miniature representations of reality with the goal of presenting life in a form that is easy to understand. Only that small portion of life that is controllable is shown and the uncertain and the unknown are excluded. Millhauser's art presents a way to escape from fearful reality. His fiction only superficially resembles reality. He brings the reader into a strange and unfamiliar world.
