A 2.4-mile stretch of Route 1 from the orange dinosaur in Saugus to the Showcase Cinemas in Revere would expand from two lanes to three in each direction, as part of a major expansion proposed by the state Highway Department. The extra lanes would improve traffic flow, safety, and exit ramps, particularly near Copeland Circle, at Route 60 in Revere, which has one of the highest accident rates in the state, according to the department.
