WHEN Rangers retreated from the race to sign the hot football property that is * u c i a n o Figueroa last week, it was a far cry from the type of signing the Ibrox club was making only a few short summers ago.
A 22-year-old Argentinian forward, who had nabbed five goals against Boca Juniors when he was watched and courted by Alex McLeish, Figueroa had appeared to be the answer to Rangers' need for a goalpoacher to match the threat at Celtic.
Then Martin Bain, the club's new director of football business, reported that Rangers would not be competing for his signature...
