One Sunday morning in basic training during World War II, so the story goes, a raw Jewish recruit tried to get out of kitchen duty by claiming he was half Irish and had to go to Mass. "Okay, Paddy," said a bemused officer, and the name stuck. Sidney Chayefsky of the Bronx, born in 1923 to Russian Jewish immigrants, became Paddy Chayefsky, the television and stage dramatist and movie scriptwriter, and forever after he was a divided soul.
