Speech-synthesis integrated circuits (IC) are being used in a growing number and range of consumer products, including toys, appliances, clocks, and devices for the handicapped. Current high-quality speech-synthesis systems use samples of an actual human voice and data compression for predictive-coding algorithms, the two most popular of which are adaptive differential pulse-code modulation (ADPCM) and linear predictive coding (LPC).
