Soka Gakkai International, the Buddhist sect to which Mariane Pearl belongs, was founded in Japan in 1930 as a branch of the ancient Nichiren Buddhist tradition. It has 12 million members in 165 countries. As a lay organization, Soka Gakkai has no priests, lamas or other holy figures.
