Smith, West Allis businesswoman, was ahead of her time

At a time when other women hadn't yet realized what "liberated" meant, Virginia "Ginger" Smith was hair-spraying her orange hair 8 inches above her forehead, speeding across town in a chartreuse convertible and tending bar in her own restaurant.
Smith -- a matchmaker, dirty joke-teller, inspirational mother and prominent West Allis businesswoman -- died Aug. 22. But she left friends and family members chuckling with memories of the unconventional.
