Sidney Rand, once president of St. Olaf College and a former U.S. ambassador to Norway, died this week in Northfield, Minn. He was 87.

Described as a "gentleman" who led the college with quiet determination and influenced many people with his kind intellect and warm humor, Rand was "one of Minnesota's truly remarkable human beings," said former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale.

"He was a religious leader, an academic leader and he was a wonderful president of St. Olaf College," said Mondale, who helped install Rand as ambassador in 1980.
