The classification of all places of Shinto worship as shrines does not do justice to their varying functions. The use of the word 'shrine' probably arose as a way of making distinct Shinto buildings from Buddhist ones, which usually are called temples. The history of the usage of the word 'shrine' and suggested amendments to the ways in which Shinto places of worship are classified, as well as the limits of calling every Shinto building a shrine, are discussed.
