Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif was fired by Pres Ghulam Ishaq Khan after he threatened to join forces with Benazir Bhutto to strip the president of some of his constitutional powers. Interim prime minister Balakh Sher Mazari is not as ambitious. ON APRIL 18th Nawaz Sharif became the third elected prime minister of Pakistan in five years to be booted out by a president. Like Mohammad Khan Junejo (sacked in 1988, by Zia ul Haq) and Benazir Bhutto (sacked in 1990 by Ghulam Ishaq Khan, the man who dismissed Mr Sharif), Mr Sharif was charged with corruption, nepotism and mismanagement.
