Everyone from Ronald Reagan to Yasser Arafat wanted the Labor party to win this week's Israeli election. Everyone, that is, except a majority of Israelis. Inconveniently, they split their vote right down the middle. Well, not quite. They gave enough new support to nationalist and religious parties to give Labor's arch-rival, Likud, a good shot at forming the next coalition government.
