In "Rehabilitating Bret Harte" (Documentary Editing, March 1997), Gary Scharnhorst, author of Bret Harte's California (1990), lamented that "Harte's writings [had ] disappeared from the textual landscape like books banned in Boston." This collection of letters is his effort to "rehabilitate" Harte's reputation.
