Pennsylvania students were not only allowed to smoke in school at one time, but joined their teacher in enjoying tobacco. In with their lunches, mothers would pack in tobacco and a pipe, explains Mark E. Achtermann of Lancaster. They would all sit there and smoke away. That fact surprises adults today when they hear presentations about Pennsylvania school days, 1755-style.
