In December 1991, Richard Handler agreed that he would interview David Schneider for Current Anthropology. A few weeks later, a text arrived at the CA office. Although I laughed a lot from the first page, it was only some way into the interview that I realized it was one of David's spoofs. I pretended that we were going to publish it at once. David wrote me several letters in the next few weeks to which he appended somewhat anxious messages - which, of course, I ignored.
Richard Handler actually does publish the spoof interview, as a lead-in to the book. Everyone who knew him will recognize...
