AS LEGACIES go, Sam Walton's was vast. When he died in April, aged 74, Walton left behind him the world's biggest retail chain, with sales of $44 billion in 1991. Each week 40m shoppers pass through its 1,750 or so stores; each year they buy 280m or so pairs of socks. Suppliers tremble at the thought that Wal-Mart might drop them: Procter & Gamble, for instance, sells more to Wal-Mart than to Japan.
