The Salute is to a small poetry magazine's fifty years of circulation. Outposts was started by Howard Sergeant in 1944 and edited by him until 1986. What is even more remarkable is that he did it single-handed.

During the years 1939-45, his Air Ministry service took him to a number of RAF stations, often in remote places. He found there a surprising number of people who shared his interest in poetry and wrote poems in whatever time they had free from their official duties.
