Books about magic, read by grown-ups as well as children, are selling like billy-o. The four Harry Potters have now shifted more than 8 million copies altogether. There were 12 million Tolkien titles sold last year alone in the UK. Even the newcomer in this arena, Philip Pullman, sold 699,080 units of his Dark Materials trilogy in 2002. Yesterday, Radio 4 launched its giant adaptation of Pullman's epic, in three two-and-a-half-hour parts. This "full-cast dramatisation" is already available in BBC Radio Collection cassettes too.
