The Russian Cossacks State Song and Dances Ensemble erupt on stage, marching, flag-waving, strutting and firing cannon. This is almost tongue-in-cheek nationalism, but there is also pride in their culture and a determination to show us what they can do. There were times on 27 February in the Peacock Theatre when they appeared to be plugged into the national grid because their energy and exuberance was so electrifying that I found myself smiling, infected by an enthusiasm which filled the whole theatre.
